Care reviewed 2026-10-04 · Scope: species

Trade plants include cultivated selections and hybrids; identify the purchase rather than assuming all African violets are this exact species.

Find the right light.

Choose bright, filtered light; protect foliage from strong direct sun.

Low-light tolerance never means a dark room. Observe the actual plant position across the day and through the seasons.

Water by observation.

Keep a freely draining mix moist without waterlogging it. Excess water can damage roots and the crown.

A fixed weekly watering schedule cannot account for your light, temperature, pot or mix. Check moisture and drainage before deciding to water.

Give it room.

A compact flowering plant for a bright shelf or desk. Cultivated selections vary in flower and foliage form.

Living with pets

ASPCA lists African violets under their former genus, Saintpaulia spp., as non-toxic to cats and dogs. This is not a claim for every Streptocarpus species.

These notes do not identify a plant. Check its scientific name with the seller. Any chewed plant may cause stomach upset; contact your local veterinarian if ingestion is suspected.
