Listed non-toxic by ASPCA

Care reviewed 2026-10-04 · Scope: species

An older ASPCA general-news article uses 'mildly toxic' for spider plants. Prefer the current species database wording 'listed non-toxic', with the general ingestion caveat; never label 'safe to eat'.

Find the right light.

Medium, indirect light is a good starting point; protect from strong direct sun.

Low-light tolerance never means a dark room. Observe the actual plant position across the day and through the seasons.

Water by observation.

Keep the mix moderately moist with good drainage. It tolerates occasional dryness; avoid standing water.

A fixed weekly watering schedule cannot account for your light, temperature, pot or mix. Check moisture and drainage before deciding to water.

Give it room.

Arching leaves and hanging plantlets need clearance around a shelf or hanging pot.

Living with pets

Listed as non-toxic to cats and dogs in ASPCA's plant database. Chewing any plant can still cause stomach upset.

These notes do not identify a plant. Check its scientific name with the seller. Any chewed plant may cause stomach upset; contact your local veterinarian if ingestion is suspected.
